Geskiedenis |
Cecil Henning and his wife, Sylvia were hard working and had good business sense. They built an apartment building in Port Elizabeth and named it Grenville Mansions, after Cosmo Grenville Henning. Later they sold the apartment building and in the late 1940s started a transportation business out of Uitenhage. Cecil and his son Cosmo traveled to California, USA and bought a fleet of GMC buses. The buses were imported to Port Elizabeth but arrived in many pieces and without an owners instruction manual. Cecil therefore had to assemble each bus by hand using his mechanical knowledge. This is how Henning Bus Service came into being. The bus service also served Redhouse, Despatch and Port Elizabeth. Buses were always in waiting at the Uitenhage Railway Station and towns where the train stopped such as Swartzkop Station which was a major stop for Johannesburg and some of the eastern cities. The business operated successfully for many years under the ownership and management of Cecil and Sylvia and was regarded as being the first bus service in Uitenhage. The going concern was eventually sold in the late 1960s.
