Mike was schooled in Pretoria and Westville - Grade 1 to 7 at Waterkloof Primary School) , Grade 8 to9 at Pretoria Boys High and Grade 10 to 12 at Westville Boys High School. He studied at the University of Natal from 1981 to 1989 and obtainee a PhD degree in Mathematics.
In athletics he ran provincial cross country, road running and on the track. He also played chess provincially.
He worked at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from January 1991 to April 2010 and then moved to the University of Johannesburg from May 2010 as a research professor in mathematics.
The South African National Research Foundation (NRF) has for the third time granted Prof Michael Henning of the University of Johannesburg Henning an A rating. This time in the much-coveted A1 category. The A1 rating is the highest rating of the NRF.
The NRF grants A1 ratings to researchers who are recognised internationally by all reviewers as leading scholars in their field for the high quality and wide impact of their recent outputs.
An A1 rating is a rare honour reserved for the most distinguished researchers,
