Geskiedenis |
Joyce was born in Rotherham Yorkshire, England in 1933. She attended the Rotherham Girls High School. In 1959 Joyce came to South Africa where she taught at Amanzimtoti Government School for three years. During that time she played a big role in the dramatic society where she won the prize as leading lady where 12 societies took place.
Joyce met Cosmo Henning and they were returned to England to be married in 1961. During this time Cosmo attended the Sheffield University for extended studies and Joyce taught at a school in Sheffield. After one year, Joyce and Cosmo returned to South Africa where Cosmo taught at the Teachers Training College in Graaff-Reinett for five years. Joyce gave birth to two sons Paul and Michael and taught at the primary school in Graaf-Reinett.
They moved to Pretoria where Cosmo worked at the archive for music. Joyce did relief teaching at Waterkloof School and took part in dramatics and many plays. Son Adrian and daughter Susan were born in Pretoria in 1971 and 1973 respectively.
After 12 years, Joyce and Cosmo moved to Westville, Natal where she taught at a private school for children with special needs and Cosmo worked at the University of Durban Westville. Joyce played active roles in the Methodist Churches in Pretoria and Westville. Joyce and Cosmo retired to Fish Hoek, Cape Town after living in Natal for 20 years.
Sadly Cosmo passed away in 1999. Joyce remained in Fish Hoek and joined the Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and joined the Women’s Auxiliary. She met Clifford Smith who was also a member of the Methodist Church and they married in 2008. In 2018 they moved to Noordhoek Manor Retirement Village, Cape Town.
